In the last discussion, Miss caught me a bit by surprise by mentioning that we will be discussing college essays and how to properly prepare for one. It was a pretty convenient coincidence seeing as I had to start writing my own personal essay for my UK college applications. The concept of college essays are still particularly daunting to me as I imagine my essays being compared to thousands upon thousands of other applicants' essays as they try to justify a reason as to why one applicant is more worthy of a spot in their school more than the other.
I would consider myself someone who is quite confident in their writing and persuasion skills, however I struggle greatly with the nuances that comes with personal writing. Argumentative essays are manageable as even though I am contributing my own personal opinion, I am not specifically describing my in-depth feelings. When it comes to describing my own personal experiences, it becomes a more complicated ordeal as it is difficult to pinpoint what part of my life defines me and how I could appropriately describe it when promoting myself to colleges.
Luckily, in this discussion, Miss allowed us to first outline different aspects of ourselves by using "essence objects" which greatly correlates or represents different parts of our lives or personality. It was an interesting exercise, listening to the speaker point out different keywords that we have to connect to our own lives and whatnot. For example, the speaker will mention something along the lines of "your safe place" or "your favorite meal made by your grandma" and you simply note down what those different things are to yourself.
He described it as an external link, in which when you click on one of those links, you get transported to a whole new different page revealing every intimate detail pertaining to that one keyword or object. Some of these questions are also somewhat personal, but Miss advised us to not write those down (i.e. things like trauma, etc.)
The speaker explained how by having all these different "external links" which describe different aspects of your life, you can pick and choose which ones you would like to describe in your college essay so that your desired school will be able to see the parts of you that are more true.
Miss mentioned how when writing a college essay, it is advised to not lie about your character or person as that is the sort of persona you will be advertising to your college. If your college accepts you even though your stories in the essay was fabricated, you will end up having to live up to the fake expectation you had set for yourself in the writing.
This gave me a lot of perspective on how I should proceed with my essay writing and what sort of character should I focus on when I advertise myself. Even then, I will still need a bit more practice in writing a college essay, as well as how I should "prove" my love for the major or school I'm deciding on. In full transparency, I'm not the sort of person who have passions or dreams, I simply have interests or ambitions which will take me to higher places in accordance to my skillset, hence why I don't "love" the idea of choosing a pharmacy or a specific school. I'm a more technical person rather than a hopeful type.
Anyways, that is all for this week's discussion.
Thank you for reading!
