Atticus is an icon in the novel for one chief aspect: empathy. He teaches his daughter, Scout, to understand the opposing side's point of view. He encourages her to "climb into another person's skin and walk around in it." This lesson is very close to my heart because I always believe that understanding other people, especially on matters on which we disagree, is essential for developing compassion and rearing relationships. I would like to develop the ability to approach things with such sensitivity and to be able to view life from so many perspectives.
Another aspect of Atticus's character is his commitment to family. He raises Scout and Jem with love, patience, and guidance, teaching them valuable life lessons despite the challenges he faces. His role as a father shows me the importance of leading by example and being a steady, loving presence in my relationships with family and friends.
I hope one day to attain the level Atticus holds so well-being among his people a good person and an influencer of integrity. The fact that Atticus impacts people through this subtle, subtle power shows just how the values of respect, kindness, and understanding should be applied universally. A balanced personal integrity to be there when others need their support or just guidance in one's life as seen in the character of Atticus.
