For this period, we finally started on this half-term's lesson on making a character to help visualize what we would like to be. I'll keep this part short but for this character, we will be making them a career path, a degree, and then a resume which we will then "submit" to the job application we intend to have.
This mini me character is supposed to be an extension of yourself, a character that you wish you could be. You give them a name, aspirations, and life, basically. You give them your dreams and your achievements. I would say, a "perfect" you, if possible.
Miss handed us a little worksheet to aid us in this character creation. It was quite neat since as a writer, I'm used to writing characters like these, often ones who are extensions of my own person. But not quite characters that are very much "me".
It was a hard choice, but I decided on the name "Marshall" for a male character. I could've chosen a female character but that felt a little too close to home. He goes by "Teddy" by his friends because his middle name is "Theodore". He's Australian but he's half-Indonesian (an homage to my own ethnicity!). There is actually quite a large population of Indonesians in Australia since the countries are so close and a good percentage of Australians can also speak Bahasa. Very neat!
One of the few traits that I gave Marshall were directly from my own person. He likes flowers and dreamed of running his family's flower shop and help out his mother and sister. He's good at Math and is an architecture major. This of course builds up his story as someone who's applying for an architect firm. He's rather short, only about 5'6, and he's got this cute boyish face that caused him to get made fun of when he was younger.
In a weird turn of events, it somehow feels like I'm writing my own "son" in a way, as I do with all the other characters I have written in my lifetime. It was difficult to come up with more details because I didn't really want Marshall to be a direct copy of me. I wanted him to be realistic and yet separate. A serious character and not something overly "trope-y" or cliche. Of course, I threw in a few cliches here and there just for fun.
Anyways, that's all for now regarding "Marshall". I'll most likely decide on more details as time goes on and Marshall builds on character. So far, this lesson is pretty fun!
Thanks for reading!
